Asar 15 Ropain Festival(June 29, 2018)
Songs, dances and games in the mud, but also hard work with the feet in the water. Near Kathmandu, Nepal, farmers celebrate Asar Pandhra, the rice planting festival. Also known as Ropain festival, (from ropain which means rice plantation), is a very important day considering that Nepal is a country based mostly on agriculture.
The month of Asar (in the Nepali calendar), is favorable for paddy cultivation due to the rainy season. For this event is tradition to celebrate this date with various rituals and events, such as play with the mud and water, plough the field, plants rice and eat beaten rice with yoghurt (dahi-chiura). In recent years, the festival has become popular amongst the tourist visiting Nepal. You’ll find many tourists who won’t hesitate to dive into the muddy water and enjoy the day along with the locals.
