Volunteering Project in Nabingram (August 10, 2018)
We successfully finished another important volunteering project alongside with Mother and Children Art Foundation, the team of volunteering lived for three days at the school community of Nabingram in Kathmandu, working and experiencing Nepali culture. At their arrival the team from Kearsney college UK received a welcome ceremony and the community offered them white scarf (Khada) together with red tika on their forehead.
One of the teachers delivered a welcome speech, setting a positive tone for the team’s visit. Following this, the group was taken on a tour around the project area to get a sense of the tasks ahead and understand the community’s needs.
During a discussion with the chairperson, the team identified and agreed on several key tasks. These included digging a drain, excavating the foundation for retaining walls, creating murals, and paving with concrete blocks. The discussion was thorough, ensuring that all tasks were clearly understood and allocated.
On the first day of work, the team was organized and eager to start. They began by visiting the nearest handicraft shop to purchase necessary materials. The shopping list included concrete blocks, stationery items, sports materials, and stone dust, which were essential for the completion of their assigned tasks.
The selection of materials was critical to the success of their projects. Concrete blocks and stone dust would be used in construction tasks like the drain and retaining walls, while stationery items and sports materials would support educational and recreational activities within the community.
During their stay, the team engaged with the local community by participating in a cookery class. This hands-on experience allowed them to learn traditional culinary techniques and bond with the locals over shared meals.
In addition to the cookery class, the team also contributed to the community by teaching classes to local students. This exchange of knowledge and culture was enriching for both the visitors and the students, fostering a deeper connection and understanding
As a farewell gesture, the school community organized a closing ceremony featuring musical performances by the students. The event concluded with the offering of white scarves and red tika, traditional symbols of honor and blessings, marking a memorable end to their visit.
