The Overland Tour to Kailash Mansarovar via the Kerung border is a captivating 16-day journey starting from Kathmandu. The adventure begins with an 8-hour drive from Kathmandu to the Kerung border, situated north of the city. This scenic route takes you through Langtang National Park, offering stunning views and a picturesque drive. The Kerung border is a favored entry point to Kailash, serving as a popular alternative to the Kodari border. Close to Kerung is the Tibetan town of Saga, a vital stop on the tour. To ensure proper acclimatization and a smooth transition, the itinerary includes an extra day in Kerung before continuing to Saga.

The primary aim of this pilgrimage is to reach the sacred Lake Mansarovar and experience the awe-inspiring Mount Kailash. The 3-day Mount Kailash Parikrama (Kora) represents the most challenging aspect of the tour. Pilgrims can opt to hire a personal horse and helper to assist them during the trek. The Kora spans 53 kilometers and includes crossing the highest pass, Dolma La (5,600m). Although the trek can be demanding, it is manageable for those who are physically fit and accustomed to trekking.

Itinenary

Upon your arrival at the airport, a representative from Lhasso Adventure will greet you and promptly arrange your transfer to the hotel. After settling in, there will be a brief orientation session followed by a welcome dinner to commence your journey.

After breakfast, we will proceed for the Tibet Visa and then we will arrange a guided sightseeing to explore some major religious and cultural heritage sites of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.

Guided sightseeing to Budhanilkantha, a sleeping Vishnu temple, Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site & the city of fine arts. There will be a detailed briefing on Kailash Yatra and its preparations in the evening.

We will organize a Havan (fire ritual) and Rudrabhishek (ritual offering to Lord Shiva) within the grounds of the Pashupatinath Temple. Following these ceremonies, we will proceed for Darshan (worship) at the Pashupatinath Temple. If time allows, we will also visit other significant religious sites in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, we will embark on a scenic drive to Timure, a border village on the Nepalese side. The journey by tourist coach typically spans 7-8 hours, crossing the Mahabharata mountain range and tracing the banks of the Uttar Ganga river. We will pause for a lunch break midway through the journey. Overnight accommodations  at Timure/ Ghattekhola will be provided at a local hotel, inclusive of all meals.

After breakfast, we will complete the border formalities on both the Nepal and Tibet sides before proceeding with our journey to Kerung. After breakfast, we will embark on a scenic drive towards Saga, a day filled with anticipation and adventure. Along the way, we will pause for a delightful picnic lunch amidst picturesque surroundings. Today promises to be particularly exhilarating as we traverse one of the highest passes (Ghungtang-La 5236M))of our journey, treating ourselves to breathtaking views of majestic mountain scenery.

We will spend an acclimatization day at Saga (4550m/14927.82ft.). After breakfast, we’ll take the opportunity to explore the banks of the Brahmaputra River.

After breakfast, we will proceed to Lake Manasarovar. Today marks our first sight of the sacred Mt. Kailash and Manasarovar Lake from Horre Pass. We will commence with prayers during this initial darshan and begin the Parikrama (circumambulation) of Lake Manasarovar via an eco-tourist bus. Tonight, accommodation will be at a guesthouse in Chiu Gompa. While basic, this overnight stay next to the holy lake promises to be a memorable and spiritually enriching experience.

In the morning, we will perform the Havana and Puja ceremonies followed by a sacred ritual bathing in Lake Manasarovar. Later in the afternoon, we will drive to Tirthapuri, also known as Adi Badrinath, located along the banks of the Sutlej River. Here, we will explore its significant attractions before continuing our journey to Darchen, the base camp of Mount Kailash, offering a close view of its majestic south face. We will spend the night in a hotel in Darchen.

We will drive to Tharboche/Yamadwoar, a significant pilgrimage site for Tantra practitioners. Afterward, we will embark on a trek to Diraphuk, where you will experience a remarkably close view of the North face of Mount Kailash, revered as the Linga form, offering a profoundly divine perspective. We will spend the night in a guesthouse at Diraphuk, ensuring a comfortable stay amidst this sacred journey.

Charan Sparsha Day, when pilgrims traditionally pay homage by touching or prostrating themselves before Mount Kailash’s base, often involves an overnight stay at Driraphuk. Situated at an altitude of 4,900 meters (approximately 16,076 feet), Driraphuk offers pilgrims a strategic resting point before the rigorous trek ahead, including the challenging ascent to Dolma La Pass. The overnight stay allows pilgrims to acclimatize to the high altitude and prepare physically and spiritually for the next day’s journey, which includes significant rituals and reflections amidst the awe-inspiring landscape of the sacred mountain.

Today marks the most challenging leg of the Parikrama. We will commence early in the morning to make the most of the day. The journey involves a 4-5 hour trek to reach the Dolma Pass, or alternatively, a 2-3 hour ride on horseback. Upon reaching the pass, we will visit Gauri Kunda for Darshan, a sacred site near Dolma La. Following this spiritual pause, we will descend steeply to Sabje Zuthuk, where we will break for lunch. Afterward, the trek continues downhill (with the option to use horseback) towards Zuthulphuk Gompa. This monastery will be our resting place for the night, where comfortable accommodations in a guesthouse await us.

The journey from Zuthulphuk Gompa to Tangsar typically involves trekking for about 2-3 hours. Tangsar serves as a meeting point where trekkers then embark on a drive to Saga via Darchen. This route allows travelers to transition from the rugged terrain around Mount Kailash to the more developed areas near Saga, providing a mix of adventure and scenic landscapes throughout the day’s journey.
