Overview

The Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek via Cho La Pass is one of the most rewarding trekking adventures in the Everest region, combining the highlights of both the Gokyo Lake Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek into a single journey. Instead of following only one route, this itinerary connects the peaceful Gokyo Valley with the iconic trail to Everest Base Camp by crossing the high mountain Cho La Pass (5,420 m / 17,782 ft). It is an ideal choice for trekkers who want to experience a wider variety of landscapes, mountain viewpoints, and Sherpa culture in one trek.

The journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla before following the trail through Sagarmatha National Park and the lively Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. From there, the route leaves the main Everest trail and heads toward the beautiful Gokyo Valley, where a chain of turquoise glacial lakes, peaceful mountain villages, and dramatic Himalayan scenery create one of the most scenic sections of the Khumbu region. This section follows the same route as the Gokyo Lake Trek, offering a quieter experience away from the busier trails.

One of the major highlights of the trek is the climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m / 17,575 ft), one of the finest viewpoints in the Himalayas. From the summit, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and many other snow-covered peaks. The journey then continues across the rugged Cho La Pass, a challenging but rewarding crossing that links the Gokyo Valley with the classic route to Everest Base Camp.

After crossing the pass, the journey continues to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft) and the famous viewpoint of Kala Patthar (5,545 m / 18,192 ft), where trekkers are rewarded with some of the closest and most spectacular views of Mount Everest. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Sherpa villages, ancient monasteries, suspension bridges, and welcoming mountain teahouses that offer a deeper understanding of life in the Himalayas.

The Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek via Cho La Pass is best suited for trekkers with good fitness who are looking for a more complete Everest adventure. By combining the peaceful beauty of the Gokyo Valley, the challenge of crossing a high Himalayan pass, and the achievement of reaching Everest Base Camp, this trek offers one of the most diverse and rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal.

However, with proper preparation, pacing, and guidance, it can be achievable for determined first-time high-altitude trekkers.

The Gokyo EBC Trek via Cho La Pass is more difficult than the standard Everest Base Camp trek due to the added challenge of crossing Cho La Pass and covering more varied terrain. It requires better endurance, balance, and acclimatization. Trekkers should be prepared for steeper sections, colder conditions, and longer days compared to the regular EBC route.

The total distance of the Gokyo EBC Trek via Cho La Pass typically ranges between 120 to 140 kilometers, depending on the itinerary and route variations. This includes trekking to Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, and crossing Cho La Pass. Daily walking distances vary, allowing time for acclimatization and reducing the physical strain of high-altitude trekking.
