In the morning, we visit Lord Buddha’s birthplace and other historical sites in Lumbini. Lumbini is the traditional birthplace of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, believed to have been born in the 6th century B.C.

According to Buddhist tradition, Maya Devi (or Mayadevi) gave birth to the Buddha on her way to her parents’ home in Devadaha in May of the year 642 BC. Siddhartha Gautama, the future Buddha, was delivered under a shade tree, his arrival marked by the utterance, “This is my final rebirth,” as the branches were gripped during labor. Legend also acknowledges that he immediately walked and took seven steps, each marked by a blooming lotus flower.

In 249 BC, Emperor Asoka, a Buddhist convert, visited Lumbini and erected four stupas and a stone pillar. Asoka’s Pillar bears an inscription stating, “King Piyadasi (Ashoka), beloved of devas, in the 20th year of his reign, made a royal visit. The birth of Buddha Sakyamuni was commemorated here with the construction of a stone railing and the erection of a stone pillar. Tax exemption and entitlement to only the eight parts were granted to Lumbini village in recognition of this event.

Lumbini was rediscovered in 1895, with Asoka’s Pillar being identified by its inscription by a German archaeologist. Chinese pilgrim Fa Xian’s records also aided in identifying the religiously significant site. Lumbini was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
