Lhasso Adventure

From July 11-12, the group from Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School in the UK participated in a community project at Ram Janaki Primary School in Nepal. The team of 15 volunteers spent two days living within the community, assisting with various projects and exchanging cultural experiences with the students.

Upon their arrival, the team was warmly welcomed with a ceremony where they were offered white scarves, called Khadas, and red tika on their foreheads. This gesture symbolized honor and blessings, setting the tone for their meaningful and collaborative stay.

The headmaster of the school welcomed the team with a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude for their presence and support. His words set a positive tone for the day, highlighting the importance of collaboration and community service.

Following the welcome speech, the team was given a tour of the school to familiarize themselves with the project areas. The tour provided a comprehensive overview of the school’s needs and allowed the team to assess the work that lay ahead.

After the tour, the team came together to agree on the specific tasks they would undertake. They decided to focus on wall painting, fixing mirrors, painting doors and windows, and leveling the playground. This collaborative decision marked the beginning of their efforts to enhance the school’s environment and create a better learning space for the students.

Overall, the team spent Rs 9,000 on paint supplies and Rs 64,000 on sand, stone, and cement. During their stay, they actively engaged with the local community by participating in cookery classes, teaching English, and playing sports with the students.

As a farewell, the team delivered a short speech and performed their national anthem alongside some dancing. During the closing ceremony, the team received an appreciation letter and a red scarf. From this experience, not just the volunteers had a meaningful time and learn about a different culture, but also the school benefited a lot from the team. The group helped to reduce the flow of wastage water on the playground by renovating the ground; moreover, the students will now be able to enjoy a better and safer school environment.
